The Marrickville Transport Action Group (formerly Marrickville Tunnel Action Group) has formed from results of the successful campaign to reverse Marrickville Council's support for a road tunnel under Sydenham Road.
The Marrickville Tunnel Action Group to was formed at an inaugural meeting on 17 November 2004, and immediately began to rally the community and the Council to look more closely at the impacts as well as the alternatives to the proposal. Less than a month later, the Council threw its support behind the campaign to find alternatives to a tunnel. Success!
Although Marrickville Council has withdrawn its support for the project (except the ALP councillors!), and the RTA has said that it would be too expensive, the Sydney Morning Herald has been talked about the Marrickville "Airport" Tunnel as part of links between the Airport/Port Botanty and the M4 Motorway. This doesn't look good for Marrickville if the RTA found a private investor willing to put up the funds. So, while MTAG has broadened its focus beyond the tunnel under Sydenham Road, it has not been forgotten!
